• An assortment of Eastern, Western and Indigenous peoples’ paper making tools decorates the back of the folded folio, complemented with the words “Some Implements for Making Paper” typeset in Grimaldi, a fanciful type face designed in 1887.

Women and Papermaking folio, back cover

From Women Making History: The Revolutionary Feminist Postcard Art of Helaine Victoria Press by Julia M. Allen and Jocelyn H. Cohen

  • Cover for Women & Paper: A Postcard Collection Recounting Women’s Involvement in a Variety of Trades & Crafts in the Fabrication of Paper. After the sheets were dipped, pressed, and dried, the four postcards were placed in the middle and the flaps folded over to enclose them. The top flap served as a title page. Jocelyn Cohen printed “Women & Paper” in red ink, using an antique ornate type called Grimaldi. For the subtitle, “A Postcard Collection Recounting Women’s Involvement in a Variety of Trades & Crafts in the Fabrication of Paper,” she used Munder Venezian. The back featured an engraving of images of papermaking tools with a headline, “Some Implements for Making Paper,” in the Grimaldi typeface. The inside flap provided the colophon information, including: “Special thanks to Joan Sterrenburg from Indiana University for opening up the world of papermaking to me.” The cover had deckle edges on all sides, as the shape was masked off in the form, rather than being cut after drying. Edition of 60.
