• Page 224 →Eliza Atkins Gleason (b. 1909). Librarian and educator. Dr. Gleason was the first Black woman to receive her Ph.D. in library science, conferred by the University of Chicago in 1940, and wrote her dissertation on the administration of public library service to southern Blacks. She worked for many years in southern university and college libraries and from 1941-46 was the dean of the library school at Atlanta University. In 1953, Dr. Gleason continued her career in the Chicago area and has held positions at Chicago Teachers College, John Crerar Library, Chicago Public Library, and Northern Illinois University.
