From Canoes: A Natural History in North America by Mark Neuzil and Norman Sims

In British Columbia and elsewhere on the west coast of North America, these boats (also called sturgeon-nosed canoes) were designed to cut through bulrushes easily in areas where ducks' eggs could be harvested and muskrats could be trapped. They were fast, but unstable in rapids.
