• The fragile nature of the wooden canoe is evident in this old campaigner, found near the Takhini River in the Yukon in 1995 by the Lake Laberge Archaeology Project.

Old Wooden Canoe

From Canoes: A Natural History in North America by Mark Neuzil and Norman Sims

  • A dugout canoe, from a cottonwood tree, it was found cached in dense bush and thought to date from the early 20th century. At 14.5 feet long and 3 feet across, patches of red ochre paint could still be seen on the hull. The canoe was cached upside down on two logs, which kept it from rotting entirely. Paddles were stashed underneath.
