Bread and Roses emblem

From Women Making History: The Revolutionary Feminist Postcard Art of Helaine Victoria Press by Julia M. Allen and Jocelyn H. Cohen

  • The Bread & Roses postcards were designed so that when placed together, an emblem representing ‘We want bread and roses, too’ became a complete circle. Each card had ¼ of the emblem in a corner. Nancy Poore and Jocelyn Cohen designed the emblem using a dingbat with the wheat sheaths representing bread in a circle and some little rose ornaments. They pulled a proof of each and pasted them up into the design and sent it to an engraver. After the other two press runs were done for the fronts, they printed the bread and roses emblem in copper.
