From Canoes: A Natural History in North America by Mark Neuzil and Norman Sims

  • Illustration of the Duluth Pack for US patent number 268,932. Camille Poirier designed the Duluth Pack for use in trips to the canoe country wilderness of northern Minnesota, and he received a patent in 1882. The design uses pieces of canvas and leather straps to make a square pack, which is meant to easily fit in the bottom of a canoe.
