Developing a reflective approach to learning

From The Media and Communications Study Skills Student Guide by Doug Specht

  • Reflective learning is explained as a way of allowing the student to step back from their learning experiences in order to develop critical thinking skills and to improve on their future performance by analyzing experiences. The chapter challenges the student reader to try out few different ways of reflecting on their work and learning that will help them find out what works best for them whilst the encouraging of sharing ideas with others. Motivation and previous learning experiences are highlighted as important influences and also the benefits of considering what learning experiences have been enjoyable and to understand why. Is it something that can be recreated? Key tips are recapped including reflections on planning, prioritizing and how to avoid procrastination. Reflection exercises are used as one form of assessment and the chapter highlights that these are undertaken to help the learner and should be viewed that way.
