American Progress

From Fashion Nation: Picturing the United States in the Long Nineteenth Century by Sandra Tomc

  • The print shows an allegorical female figure of America leading pioneers westward, as they travel on foot, in a stagecoach, Conestoga wagon, and by railroads, where they encounter Indigenous people and bison. The female figure is dressed in a skimpy white classical garment that seems ready to blow away from her body and leave her naked.
