• In the 1970s, the labyris was adopted as a Lesbian feminist symbol representing strength and independence. It is also the symbol for matriarchy and pre-dates patriarchal societies. One of several Lesbian signifiers. Buttons and jewelry with many artistic iterations of the symbol abounded. Jocelyn Cohen used this cultural symbol to create one of a kind handmade paper art.

  • Although usually making ambitious editions of handmade paper while studying papermaking at Indiana University, Jocelyn Cohen sometimes played with vats of pulp left over from other students in the class. She created a variety of whimsical cultural and political designs, couching different paper pulps onto a plain sheet. All handmade paper, 2 -3 colors pressed on cotton, jute, abaca or burlap paper. 50 copies, each unique.
