"The Cue For the Transformation Scene," Puck

From Fashion Nation: Picturing the United States in the Long Nineteenth Century by Sandra Tomc

  • A political cartoon with the World's Columbian Exposition’s dazzling White City in the background. In the foreground, two splendid female figures clad in elaborate medieval costume, one woman labeled "Democratic Party" and the other "Republican Party," shake hands as a dramatic scene shift takes place. At their feet is the stage’s trap door and four beast-like allegorical figures representing various political issues ("Wild-cat bank scare," "Force bill," "British free trade bugaboo," and "Irish patriot vote") tumble down into invisibility.
