• Mary Cassatt (American, 1845-1926). Painter acquainted with and identified as an Impressionist but who defied that label in her independent quest to escape categorization in any “school.” Refused many awards from sources she could not wholly approve. Lived most of her adult life in France. Noted for paintings of women and children, but actually worked with a variety of subject matter and with stronger technique and expression than is generally recognized.
