- Margaret E. Monroe (b. 1914). Librarian and educator. Dr. Monroe is a leader in the definition and development of adult services in public libraries. Following 13 years of service as a branch librarian and readers’ adviser with the New York Public Library, she moved into library education at Rutgers University and served as a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library School. Her many books and publications are landmarks in the field of adult services, and her keen sense of the library’s role in society has been an inspiration to her students, colleagues, and friends.
