Igor Stravinsky, The Rite of Spring

From Music on the Move by Danielle Fosler-Lussier

  • In front of a painted backdrop of hills, forest, and sky, dancers are dressed in costumes meant to invoke the indigeous: leather tunics with fringe and simple hats. Some wear furs. They trudge along slowly in lines. One bearded figure with a walking stick spins and jumps. Women enter, holding hands, in a line; they perform kicks somewhat mechanically.
