Featured here are canoes old and new, from birch bark to dugout to carbon fiber; the people who made them; and the adventures they shared. With features of technology, industry, art, and survival, the canoe carries us deep into the natural and cultural history of North America.
Floats projecting from the boat apparently weren't a desirable solution for F. W. Zeidler and C. Halpern, who in 1921 came up with a system to rotate the canoeist, rather than add to the exterior of the boat. In terms of catching on, this patent did not.
