Bruno Boulestin and Dominique Henry Gambier
From all the human remains discovered during archaeological excavations, skulls and skull fragments form a very specific group. Whereas they are under-represented or even entirely lacking from some sites, they can be over-represented at others, where they often show specific treatments ranging from simple manipulation to more complex interventions. A special study is therefore needed for these cranial remains, but the lack of any reference framework and direct sources often lead to superficial interpretations. In the light of these observations, a multi-disciplinary round-table gathering of prehistorians, archaeologists, historians, physical and social anthropologists on the topic of treatment of the human head in archaeology was held in October 2010 in the musée national de Préhistoire (Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, Dordogne, France). The purpose of this meeting was to create on the one hand a reference framework based on ethno-historical data, and also to apply it to the archaeological facts with the help of syntheses from all periods, from the Middle Palaeolithic to the end of the Iron Age. This book presents all the contributions made during this round-table.
