Revision of the American Celastracea I. Wimmeria, Microtropis, and Zinowiewia
Cyrus Longworth Lundell
Open Access
This extensive revision addresses the under-studied American Celastraceae family, specifically focusing on the genera Wimmeria, Microtropis, and Zinowiewia. The work highlights the challenges faced by systematists, particularly from tropical regions, and the difficulty of classification due to microscopic analysis. Despite these challenges, the study provides detailed insights into the subgeneric and specific relationships within Wimmeria. In contrast, most species of Microtropis and Zinowiewia are known from very few collections. This revision aims to reignite interest among collectors, paving the way for a comprehensive future study. The work is backed by extensive field studies in Mexico and Central America, funded by the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, the Faculty Research Fund of the University of Michigan, and the Carnegie Institution of Washington. It is an invaluable resource for botanists and researchers dedicated to the intricate world of Celastraceae.
