Founded in 1961, as part of the Center for South and Southeast Asian Studies Center, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at the International Institute is one of the oldest centers in the U.S. devoted to the Southeast Asian region. CSEAS seeks to promote a broader and deeper understanding of Southeast Asia, its people, histories, practices, and languages. The center is committed to creating a supportive environment where scholars, educators, students and community members have the opportunity to engage in dialogue related to Southeast Asia. To make research and scholarship available to the larger community of scholars, students, and the general public, the Center began a publications program in the mid-1970's. The program, maintained today, focuses on monographs brought out in various series, including Michigan Papers on South and Southeast Asia, Michigan Studies in Buddhist Literature, Michigan Studies of South and Southeast Asia, and other non-series publications.
