Bread & Roses, Women in the American Labor Movement poster

From Women Making History: The Revolutionary Feminist Postcard Art of Helaine Victoria Press by Julia M. Allen and Jocelyn H. Cohen

  • Bread & Roses series, Women in the American Labor Movement, a set of 9 postcards, one of which is a composite of the other eight. Helaine Victoria Press created the cards in such a way that if they were laid out together in the correct order, the viewer saw a Bread & Roses center. This circular insert intersected each photo so that each card had ¼ of the ornament. When one pieced four or all eight cards together, the ornament became whole, reminding viewers of the interconnectedness of the women’s labor movement over time and across industries. On the second printing, which was offset, they left 100 sheets uncut, creating the small poster. Originally printed letterpress in sepia with blue border and copper accent with a special Bread & Roses emblem, created as part of the design.
Reprinted in the same colors offset.
