• Cover for Women & Paper: A Postcard Collection Recounting Women’s Involvement in a Variety of Trades & Crafts in the Fabrication of Paper. The cover for the set of 4 postcards printed letterpress on handmade paper was made from a large gray sheet with four flaps in a cross shape. To make this sheet in a cross shape, Jocelyn Cohen taped off the mould so that pulp would not stick to the masked off areas. She dipped the 14” x 18” mould into a vat of gray cotton rag pulp made from an easy to find mix of colored cotton clothing. When dry, the cover folded to 5” x 6.5” in an edition of 50 copies.

  • Cover for Women & Paper: A Postcard Collection Recounting Women’s Involvement in a Variety of Trades & Crafts in the Fabrication of Paper. After the sheets were dipped, pressed, and dried, the four postcards were placed in the middle and the flaps folded over to enclose them. The top flap served as a title page. Jocelyn Cohen printed “Women & Paper” in red ink, using an antique ornate type called Grimaldi. For the subtitle, “A Postcard Collection Recounting Women’s Involvement in a Variety of Trades & Crafts in the Fabrication of Paper,” she used Munder Venezian. The back featured an engraving of images of papermaking tools with a headline, “Some Implements for Making Paper,” in the Grimaldi typeface. The inside flap provided the colophon information, including: “Special thanks to Joan Sterrenburg from Indiana University for opening up the world of papermaking to me.” The cover had deckle edges on all sides, as the shape was masked off in the form, rather than being cut after drying. Edition of 60.
