• “If it is evil to kill in the heat of passion, is it not double evil to kill by a supine community consent called law?” —Virginia Snow Stephen, printed on handmade paper.

Virginia Snow Stephen, Anti-Capital Punishment broadside

From Women Making History: The Revolutionary Feminist Postcard Art of Helaine Victoria Press by Julia M. Allen and Jocelyn H. Cohen

  • One of three broadsides on handmade paper in an edition created for Helaine Victoria’s 15th anniversary. For each of the three prints, Jocelyn Cohen made 60 sheets of paper, 9 x 12 inches. This one featured a quotation from Virginia Snow Stephen in which she argued against capital punishment. Printed letterpress in white on dark gray handmade paper from cotton rag black clothing with a red round blotch from abaca pulp couched onto the sheet. “Justice” is printed in black ink on the red round blotch. For a less expensive edition, Cohen used machine-made cover stock paper for another 200 copies, adjusting the design as necessary.
